Heartbreaking & Heartwarming.

On Saturday evening, our Homecheck Coordinator Liz (Whizzie) posted this unsolicited but moving plea on the forum.

HEARTBREAK AT HQ "Sarah and Paul have been in tears this week. Visitors & dogwalkers are at an all time low.
There was only one set of potential adopters – a nice couple who were there most of the day but didn’t adopt in the end because we couldn’t promise that the dog of their choice would not wee in the house. But even worse than all this is the news that the bank balance is, wait for it, ……….a meagre £13. Sarah and Paul realise that times are hard all round and don’t want to launch another campaign after the generous support for Alexa’s Christmas food appeal. Regardless of this, Jenny and I feel that we must make a plea to help Jasper. Jasper does not use his damaged leg, he never will now. It needs to be amputated and the sooner the better. There is infection in the wound (you can tell by the smell). This has improved with frequent cleaning with a medicated wash (which Jasper hates) and with antibiotics, but the antibiotics are upsetting Jasper’s system and causing him to wee in his bed which distresses him. The fee quoted for the operation to remove Jasper’s leg is £800. The coffers are empty. Jasper, and the other homeless dogs at Wiccaweys, need your help.
Can you do something, anything to help PLEASE? If you don’t have money to give, could you raise some? Maybe you could have a stall at a car boot, sell cakes at work…..
I urge you to try and help Jasper and Wiccaweys at this desperate time. Please don’t stand by and do nothing, leaving it to others. I am sure there is something that most of us on here can do if we really put our minds to it – not a big thing perhaps but don’t let that put you off. Lots of little things mount up and right now I think Sarah and Paul need to know that they are not alone and that people are behind them. Can we count on your support? Thank you, Liz"

Within hours, pledges of funds began coming in. Pauline and Eleanor had taken me for a night out at the cinema and I knew nothing about Liz's plea on the forum. When I arrived home I was gobsmacked to see an e-mail from Liz listing sums already promised to help Jasper. My tears of worry became tears of happiness knowing we could get Jasper sorted. Our hearts warmed with the knowledge we weren't alone. We have now been able to book Jasper in to the vets tomorrow for his pre op examination and the operation itself should happen next week.
We have been completely overwhelmed by the support we have received. A huge thank you to everyone for their incredible generosity.
The funding crisis extends beyond Jasper though, as we and other rescues across the country are hit by the credit crunch. Our tiny bank balance wouldn't have gone far with covering vet bills, rent, dog food, electricity etc so we hope people will continue to support us in caring for the numerous other dogs at Wiccaweys once Jasper is sorted. If you would like to help out please contact Liz who is co-ordinating this appeal at: lizclarke3@aol.com. Thank you.

23/10/08 UPDATE - Jasper's op is taking place on Monday - everyone keep fingers cross for him.

What happens when we visit the vets......

It started as a normal trip to the vets yesterday to pick up Blue and Sheba from their neuters.

I walk through to door to see Nicky the vet, Danni the vet nurse and a lady peering into 3 boxes in the waiting room. As I walk in broad grins start to spread across Nicky's and Danni's faces. Uhmmmmmmm, what?

So what was in the boxes?? A whole load of baby and young rabbits that some delightful person had dumped and turned loose at the lady's stables and paddocks!! She'd bought them into the vets and Nicky & Danni were trying to work out how to split them between them so they could take care of them..... yeah, right!! Oh, look whose just happened to come through the door!!!

So we went to pick up 2 dogs, and came back with 2 dogs and 9 rabbits!!

They have taken up residency in the hall at the moment and have made themselves at home. We want to keep a close eye on the 4 tiny ones as they are a little undernourished at the moment, but seem happy and contented and are tucking into their grub quite happily. They are all very friendly and very sweet. According the vet we have 8 does and 1 buck.

So here they all are. If anyone would like to offer a bunny a new home, we would LOVE to hear from you! And if anyone has any spare rabbit runs or hutches, we could really do with them at the moment! LOL!

Things to look forward too.....

We've got some good stuff going on in the next couple of months, so watch out for:
  • Paul's next 'Understanding Your Collie Day' is on Thursday the 30th October.
  • HALLOWEEN WELLIES & PAWS WALK, Saturday 1st November at Wiccs HQ, Northamptonshire - Fancy dress is positively welcome - we want to see Monsters, Witches and Wizards striding across the countryside! • Wiccaweys Christmas Party, Sunday the 7th December at Wicc HQ. Watch out for details on the events section on the website.
  • And finally for now, We are starting to get things together for our Christmas Auction to take place in November, which always helps to raise much needed funds. Keeping our fingers crossed as we desperately need it at the moment. The lovely Mary Ray has donated another training day and that is always a popular item. The auction will be held on the Wiccaweys forum. So keep your eyes peeled as there will be lots of lovely goodies to tempt you and plenty of christmas shopping to be done!

Kind words

Thank you. Thank you to everyone for their kind words for our lovely Lily. There is a very big hole here today. :( Still can't believe it. Onwards. Life carries on at Wiccs. Yesterday we had 3 new arrivals. 2 lovely collie girls who'd been found wandering on the Yorkshire Moors and were rescued by Tia Greyhound Rescue. They asked if we could help them out. They are a bit shy, but very sweet and nice girls. We also had an elderly GSD come down from Rochdale Dog Rescue. He is a lovely old man who was bewildered at what had happened to him. He didn't understand why he was dumped. He loves his cuddles and is so grateful for a soft bed and a little love. We took him to the vets today, and now it is obvious why he has been dumped. He has a large mass in his stomach, probably a tumour on his spleen which is common in GSD's. So the day we lost Lily, another old chap who needs hospice care comes to us. Zeus will stay here with us for as long as he has left, and be spoilt rotten. He is a happy old soul and today when we got back from the vets he has throughly enjoyed himself. While he is happy and painfree, then that is what he will do. Enjoy the rest of his life.

The Gentle Giant Sleeps....

This evening some more pieces of our hearts were taken from us. Our darling Lily St Bernard made her way over The Rainbow Bridge and to the Summerlands. We were both with her, and told her we loved her very much. It was a tumour in her intestines that took her from us. As we were leaving to go to the vets, her best friend, Little Pocket Rocket Jack Russell knew and she was throwing herself at the door and screaming. It broke my heart. We knew she was poorly and we didn't have long left with her, but we weren't expecting Lily to be called away just yet. Its a shock.
There is a very big gap in the house tonight. And a large personality and heart has left us. Lily was a very, very special girl. An old soul, and a true Wiccaweys Dog. A wonderful Gentle Giant. We can't believe she has gone.

Christmas Dinners Appeal!!

Our lovely fosterers co-ordinator Alexa started her christmas dinners appeal early this year - she likes to raise enough money to help feed the dogs for a month over the lean holiday period. Well, even before I'd had chance to post about it on the blog, the wonderful Wiccaweys forum members had already reach Alexa's target!!! Well done everyone, and thank you all so much!! You are all fantastic!!

Rain, Rain, Go Away....

Miserable and wet weekend at Wiccs. Absolutely foul. When it is like that it wears you out. Hope elsewhere people had a better one.

Quick Update and News

Firstly, thank you to all the lovely folks who have sent messages of support and encouragement to us, and thank to those that have sent very kind donations. You are all wonderful people and we really appreciate your support. JASPER NEWS Sadly, it isn't good. The op hasn't worked. The op went well, but Jasper himself hasn't been able to let himself believe he still had 4 working legs. He saw Rafa last week and his options are yet another operation followed by at least 2 hours of physio a day, or amputation. It is so hard because we desperately wanted to save his leg for him. Realistically though, Jasper no longer thinks he has 4 legs, he only uses it as a prop sometimes for a wee. There is no way he could cope with 2 hours plus of physio a day, and it would be another big op for him to endure that yet again may not work. It is a lot to ask of him. I think we have decided that it is time to call it quits and just go with the amputation. It will be over and done with then for him. We are all very disappointed for him, especially Rafa who worked so hard on the surgery, but we all feel Jasper has been so brave so far and that he has had enough now.
