Another long night.

BRRRR, CHILLY!! It was another overnight run for me last night. 5 dogs arriving from Ireland. Dru accompanied me as Co-driver. He was a very good boy, and it's nice to have company when out in the early hours. It was deceptifully cold last night too - didn't look that bad, but was actually quite chilly. Dru & I huddled together for warmth while waiting for the transport, sharing a cup of tea in the van. 3 of the dog that have arrived are severe cruelty cases. They have been the subject of a court case in Eire, and have been confined in police kennels for a year. 1 little girl went into kennels as a 8 week old puppy. They don't get much interaction in the kennels sadly, and are kept seperated. Poor Judy is terrifed of the world. It will take lots of time and patience to bring her round. She has been severely traumatised by her whole experience of the world so far. It breaks your heart, it really does. Well done to the girls in Eire for sticking by these dogs and for getting them to safety asap once the court case had finished. PHONES. I don't suppose I really need to say it, but we are at breaking point with the amount of calls coming in. Why do some people have to be so nasty when you are doing your best to help them? Why do people think all we have to do all day is sit by, and answer the phone? Of course, we have nothing else to do during the day, do we? A few times last week poor Paul was so angry at the end of a call that the phone went flying across the room. DOGS IN. The amount of dogs we are being asked to take is just sickening at the moment. We just can't do anymore than we are already doing. We both feel that we are standing under a huge hammer and are being hammered into the ground, a relentless hammer that doesn't let up for a second. The guilt that is laid on us because of other peoples mistakes and failings is just horrendous. HELP. We will help you and your dogs, but please understand, it can't be immediate help. Paul tries to help people with advice to make things easier for them, and more importantly the dogs, while they are on the waiting list. It is so soul destroying when you know people aren't going to bother following that advice, or aren't really listening while it is being given, or just argue back about the advice being given. They just want their dog gone, and don't give a rats-arse about anything else. Howabout, if you don't want our help and advice - don't waste our time calling and taking up precious time that could be spent on people who do want to help their dogs. THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL. Thankfully crappy days are brightened by reports from rehomed dogs, and emails, photos and letters are always very much appreciated. We've had a lovely letter this week from Isacc, Super Sheppy, Jimbo and Murphy with pics. Thanks Isacc. :) We also had a lovely letter with photos this morning from Pam, Napoleon, Tess, Kim & Cody. Happy Nappy Time!! :)

Catching Up

It's been a busy week or so, and the blog has been neglected - so here I am to catch up. WAITING LIST. The waiting list for dogs to come in is growing daily. It is very scarey at the moment, the amount of people needing to find places for their dogs - for whatever reasons. The phones are red hot as always. I need to find time to pop over to the RSPCA in Leics, as they have 3 dogs they would like us to assess and help with. DOGS IN - LAST WEEK. Last week we had little Dale arrive from RDR. On the same trip down, a little lad we'd taken an urgent call about managed to hitch a lift. He was a christmas present puppy - yes people still do it! Too active and busy for his family. He is a sweetie. The afternoon of those guys arriving we received a panicky phone call from a lady who was dreadfully upset. Her Blue Merle bitch was attacking her little terrier! When we actually found out the proper details, the blue merle bitch was actually a 12 week old puppy - who was trying to play rough in the way that collie pups do. Lesson to be learnt. I asked the lady if she could contact the breeder of the pup to see if they would take her back. She told me she couldn't reach them. I asked her where she had come from, and she said a house in Northampton, but there was no answer on the phone now and no-one in! I asked if she'd seen the parents.... Oh no, just the puppies. I said, you do realise she is probably from a puppy farm, or these people are dog dealers who buy in pups cheap from farmers? The lady didn't think so. I went round to collect the pup, and looked at the paperwork she had. The lady had bought her from a house where the mother wasn't present, there is now no answer on the phone or at the property - and the vaccination card that came with her had a Welsh address and Welsh vet details on it! The clues were all there. How on earth are we going to stop Puppy Farmers and Dog Dealers when people are still so niave? The lady realises now, and hopefully won't make the same mistake again. We renamed the puppy Tally, after our old Tots we'd lost that week. Koda. The next day we had a phone call from our local Dog Warden. Ray wondered if we would be able to help with a GSD he'd taken away from travellers. Koda had been kept chained up to be used as a guard dog and was very withdrawn in kennels. He wasn't eating and couldn't cope with being confined. I went over to see him and came back to have a chat with Paul. I phoned Ray later that afternoon to say we would take Koda in. Ray bought Koda over the following morning, and I think we all had tears in our eyes as we watch Koda discover grass for the first time. He walked on it like he was walking on hot coals! Then he was amazed as he walked round the field on a very long line and could run and follow the other dogs! His face was a picture as he discoved loads of new smells and diffent things. Koda didn't know what bits of sausage or cheese were - he didn't know what to do with it! He does now! LOL! Last week, Koda wasn't really interacting with us as everything was so new - he was just absorbing everything like a sponge. Today we had a wonderful breakthrough while out on our walk. He started to interact with us, and look to us for instruction. He is a lovely boy and will soon be right. He's also decided he doesn't like the name Koda and responds to Dru (my collies name) and Bru (which we are going to call him, but which is a bit unfortunate at the moment as you will see in a minute!) DOGS IN - THIS WEEK. Yesterday was another hectic on. Bed at Midnight on Wednesday, to be up again at 2am to go and meet Donal for 4am and pick up 2 dogs. We collected Humphrey and Keegan from Donal and headed back again to meet up with another transport at 6am. We met Pat and collected Bru (!), Bobby, and a lovely girl who needs a name! We got back home in the wind, rain and hail (you name it, it hit us) and started to settle people in. Humphrey is an ancient collie boy, bless him - poor old lad. He had no chance of getting out of the pound and was top of the list to go down. It breaks my heart, the oldies being dumped in the pounds so someone else can do the dirty work of killing them. Anyway, he's out and safe and here now. Keegan is a lovely black and white lad. Gorgeous boy, lovely nature. Bru, well Bru is another GSD! He is a rather stunning longhaired lad. He is a cuddle monster and likes to talk to you! Bobby is a sweet middle aged boy, he particularly likes hotdog sausages and cheese! And the little girl, she is a very pretty middle aged lass who likes cuddles and knows what a sofa is! She was straight on it - eyes shut and pretending to be asleep! LOL! ONWARDS. After sorting out the arrivals and the normal day to day stuff, it was back in the van and off to Laughing Dog to pick up our next lot of supplies. I was very relieved when I finished for the night last night! ANOTHER PUP! Literally just taken another request from another resuce to take in another pup - yes, you guessed it - another Christmas Pup! WHEN WILL PEOPLE THINK, WHEN WILL PEOPLE LEARN??? It isn't bloody rocket science!
